About the Mind Eraser Drink

Sometimes a drink is just a drink; you mix it, maybe pour it into a special glass and drink it up. The mind eraser is one of those more interesting cocktails that requires just a little more finesse when you’re putting it together. In other words, this cocktail is a layered drink. If you do it right, you’ll be able to see vague layers of fluid when you look at the side of your glass. This creates an interesting presentation.

The mind eraser did not get its name from its good looks. This is a sneaky cocktail that goes down so nicely that you’ll probably have two or three before the effects hit you. At that point, you’ll understand how this cocktail really got its name.

Recipes

Many drink enthusiasts have put their own spin on this drink, so you’ll find a number of similar recipes for it. However, the classic version of this cocktail includes equal portions of three main ingredients. Try the original, and then try its close cousin, the brain eraser. They are similar, yet delightfully different.

Mind Eraser

This is the traditional mind eraser drink, and it is the easiest one to layer.

  • Two ounces of Kahlua or your favorite coffee liqueur
  • Two ounces of unflavored vodka
  • Two ounces of club soda (If you don’t have club soda, you can substitute lemon-lime soda in a pinch.)

Add ice cubes to a rocks glass and pour in the vodka. Next, gently pour the Kahlua directly over an ice cube so it goes in slowly and is more likely to layer a little over the vodka. Don’t be too disappointed if the liqueur sinks; it’s still going to taste fantastic anyway. Finally, gently pour the soda in the same careful manner so it pools a little on the top of the glass before it begins to sink.

Brain Eraser

This cocktail is about half the size of the original mind eraser, but it still packs a wallop; this time tinged with cinnamon.

  • One ounce of unflavored vodka
  • One ounce of Kahlua
  • One ounce cinnamon schnapps

Layer the schnapps, the Kahlua and finally the vodka in a large shot glass.

How to Drink This Cocktail

You can drink this cocktail any way you want, but if you want to do it right, you’ve got to use a couple of straws. The mind eraser is meant to be drunk all at once. You’ll taste the vodka and then the Kahlua and finally the soda will chase it all down. Downing a cocktail this fast typically leads to a quick refill, and this is why the drink sneaks up on so many people. They’ve had a couple before they realize they ought to slow down. By then, the mind eraser has already done its job.

So, now you know what a mind eraser drink is and how to make one. Just remember that it’s best to space your refills well apart, or you may just forget your name by the end of the evening.
